HSK 3 Grammar Points: The Key Patterns, With Examples

July 8, 20267 min read

HSK 3 grammar goes beyond connecting ideas and starts reshaping the sentence itself - the 把 sentence, the 被 passive, result and direction complements, and multi-clause conditionals. These are the patterns that let you say what happened to something, how an action turned out, and under what conditions.

There is no need to grab every pattern at once. Here are the ones that carry the most weight, each with a genuine HSK 3 example so the shape is clear before you start drilling.

The 把 sentence (moving the object forward)

The sentence puts the object before the verb to focus on what happens to it, in the shape Subject + 把 + object + verb + result:

  • 我把作业做完了。
  • Wǒ bǎ zuòyè zuò wán le.
  • I finished the homework.

It is one of the signature HSK 3 patterns, and it almost always needs a result attached to the verb (here, , meaning finished).

The 被 passive (what was done to something)

marks the passive, in the shape receiver + 被 + doer + verb + result:

  • 我的手机被弟弟拿走了。
  • Wǒ de shǒujī bèi dìdi ná zǒu le.
  • My phone was taken by my younger brother.

Notice how closely 把 and 被 mirror each other: one focuses on the doer acting on an object, the other on the object being acted upon.

Result and direction complements

Complements attach to a verb to say how the action turned out. A result complement reports the outcome:

  • 我听懂了老师的话。
  • Wǒ tīng dǒng le lǎoshī de huà.
  • I understood what the teacher said.

A direction complement shows which way the action moves:

  • 他走进来了。
  • Tā zǒu jìnlái le.
  • He walked in.

Comparison in degrees

HSK 2 introduced basic comparison with . HSK 3 adds degree, so you can say how much more. Use 比…一点儿 for a little and 比…多了 for a lot:

  • 今天比昨天冷一点儿。
  • Jīntiān bǐ zuótiān lěng yīdiǎnr.
  • Today is a little colder than yesterday.

Use 越来越 for a growing change, and 跟…一样 for equality:

  • 天气越来越热。
  • Tiānqì yuèláiyuè rè.
  • The weather is getting hotter and hotter.
  • 我跟你一样高。
  • Wǒ gēn nǐ yīyàng gāo.
  • I am as tall as you.

Conditionals (如果…就, 只要…就, 只有…才)

HSK 3 is where you build two-clause conditions. 如果…就 is the everyday if:

  • 如果明天下雨,我就不去。
  • Rúguǒ míngtiān xià yǔ, wǒ jiù bù qù.
  • If it rains tomorrow, I won't go.

只要…就 means as long as, while 只有…才 means only if:

  • 只有多练习,才能进步。
  • Zhǐyǒu duō liànxí, cái néng jìnbù.
  • Only by practicing more can you improve.

More patterns to know

Beyond the big structures above, HSK 3 introduces a set of high-frequency connectors and verb patterns worth recognizing:

  • 除了…以外 - besides or except, as in 除了中文以外,他还会说英文。 (Besides Chinese, he can also speak English.)
  • 一边…一边 - doing two things at once, as in 他一边吃饭,一边看电视。 (He eats while watching TV.)
  • Causatives (使, 叫, 让) - making someone do or feel something, as in 这件事让我很高兴。 (This makes me very happy.)
  • Verb reduplication - softening a verb to mean give it a try, as in 你看看这本书。 (Take a look at this book.)

Frequently Asked Questions

What grammar is on the HSK 3 exam?
HSK 3 grammar goes well beyond HSK 2. Key patterns include the 把 sentence, the 被 passive, result and direction complements, comparison in degrees (比…一点儿 and 比…多了, 越来越, 跟…一样), conditionals (如果…就, 只要…就, 只有…才), 除了…以外, 一边…一边, and causatives with 使, 叫, and 让. You can drill them all at HSK 3 grammar.
How is HSK 3 grammar different from HSK 2?
HSK 2 grammar mostly connects and compares ideas in short sentences. HSK 3 adds patterns that reshape the sentence itself - the 把 and 被 constructions, complements that describe the result or direction of an action, and multi-clause conditionals. Sentences get longer and more precise.
What is the 把 sentence in HSK 3?
The 把 sentence moves the object before the verb to focus on what happens to it, in the shape Subject + 把 + object + verb + result. For example, 我把作业做完了 means I finished the homework. It is one of the signature HSK 3 patterns. Drill it at HSK 3 grammar.
How many grammar points are in HSK 3?
HSK 3 covers a defined set of patterns spanning the 把 and 被 sentences, complements, comparisons, conditionals, and connectors. Rather than counting them, work through them by theme with rule pages and drills at HSK 3 grammar.
Do I need grammar to pass HSK 3?
Yes, more than ever. Grammar drives the Reading and Listening sections, and now the Writing section too - you have to produce correct sentences using patterns like 把, 被, and complements. Grammar drills and a sentence builder are at HSK 3 grammar.
