1. Explain it simply
过 after a verb marks an EXPERIENCE - that you have done something before.
我去过中国 means I have been to China at some point.
过 comes right after the verb, before the object: V + 过 + object.
Don't confuse it with 了; 了 marks a completed action, 过 marks past experience.

我去过中国。
Wǒ qùguo Zhōngguó.
I have been to China.
